While critics say WFH reduces productivity.</p><p>Sandra Crous, managing director at Deel Local Payroll, powered by PaySpace, notes that there is an increasing expectation for more workplace flexibility, and certain roles work better with flexible hours and locations.</p><p>“Considering that our digital society enables remote and flexible working, it’s no wonder it has become the norm. If companies want to calibrate remote working to their requirements, they need systems that support flexibility. Payroll and human resources systems have the biggest impact.”</p><p>She highlights that modern payroll and HR platforms offer increased flexibility for companies through data-driven insights, employee enablement services, and seamless integration with other business areas.</p><p> </p><p>“They establish the processes that enable a business to adapt and adopt different work modes as required. Picture: GCIS </p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>The Gauteng High Court sitting in Pretoria has dismissed the Labour Party’s application to halt President Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision to convene a National Dialogue and two related conventions.</p><p>Judge AJ de Vos handed down judgment in the application on Friday.</p>‘Urgent interdict’<p>The Labour Party sought an urgent interim interdict to halt the National Dialogue, which is set to commence on 15 August 2025.</p><p>The party argued that the initiative is unlawful and unconstitutional.</p><p>At the heart of its objections were the costs associated with the dialogue, arguing that it is not a genuine democratic exercise, but a costly and dangerous duplication of the national legislature.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> From tiger to a pouncing police cat? If it was so that the president was exercising powers he did not have, duplicating the work of Parliament and excluding sectors of society and spending more than R 700 million on such an unlawful endeavour, there would be no recourse that would undo that harm.</p><p>“Whilst the court ultimately rejected these findings – they were sufficient to show the Labour Party would not be able to obtain redress in due course. The litigation was not vexatious or frivolous, it was motivated by a concern of constitutional compliance. The state respondents accept that the application ‘concerns a matter of significant public importance’.</p><p>“It affects a wide range of stakeholders and raises issues of national interest. In such circumstances, premised on the Biowatch principle, there should be no order as to costs,” De Vos ruled.</p><p>De Vos said there was some dispute in the papers as to whether the Labour Party had relied on Section 172 in its papers.</p><p>“Assuming such a case has been made, the court declines to exercise its Section 172 jurisdiction for the reasons the court held that the Labour Party’s prima facie rights are weak.”</p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ:‘What has gone wrong?’ – Mbeki, Biko foundations call for national dialogue amid ‘political crisis’</p>Section 172<p>Section 172 of the South African constitution outlines the powers of courts when deciding constitutional matters. Specifically, it mandates that courts must declare laws or conduct inconsistent with the constitution invalid to the extent of the inconsistency and it allows courts to make any just and equitable order.</p>Reaction<p>In a statement, the National Dialogue communications subcommittee said the judgment reaffirms that the National Dialogue is a long-term, participatory process.</p><p>“It seeks to impact on and involve every part of our country, unleashing the energies and buy-in of every citizen and every sector – an assertion we have made since its inception. It is not a ‘talk shop’, as it aims to produce outcomes that are respected and adhered to by all sectors of society,” it said.</p><p> </p><p>“The judgment further affirms the PTT’s observation about the deliberate misinformation and disinformation about the Eminent Persons Group, the first national convention, scheduled for 15-17 August 2025 at Unisa and the National Dialogue.</p><p>“We would like to emphasise that the narrative surrounding the R700m budget for the National Dialogue is both misleading and unfortunate. We heard the noise and the swearing at them. Let justice take its course.”</p><p>“We do know that more arrests have to be made. We are just asking everyone to please show restraint and give the Dunn family their time to mourn. We are continuing investigations to identify the malicious actor,” the email said..</p><p>“Technical measures were immediately taken to contain the incident after its occurrence, notably by blocking unauthorised access. Ordered to pay costs </p> <p> <img src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=" rel="noopener noreferrer"><noscript><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Meta-1.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"></noscript> <p>Picture: Supplied </p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Tech giant Meta has agreed to permanently delete more than 60 WhatsApp channels publishing child pornography involving South African school children and to comply with all requirements of an earlier high court order.</p><p>This was after Judge Mudunwazi Makamu in the Gauteng Division of the High Court in Johannesburg handed down a further order on Friday.</p><p>Meta was found in contempt of court of an earlier ruling in urgent litigation brought by the Digital Law Company (DLC) led by social media law expert Emma Sadleir.</p>Contempt<p>On Monday, Makamu ordered the company to close all accounts and channels linked to the distribution of sexual content involving school children and to “permanently disable the creator of the WhatsApp channels and Instagram profiles listed” from creating any further WhatsApp channels and Instagram profiles.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> It’s World Emoji Day😊: From 😂 to why we can’t stop using them </p> </p> </p><p>While Meta agreed to shut down all the accounts and channels linked to the distribution of sexual content involving school children, it never complied with other aspects of the ruling, including handing over the account creators’ details to DLC.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Meta was then served with an urgent contempt of court application.</p><p>In his ruling on Friday, Makamu also ordered Meta to disclose “subscriber information” for whoever is behind the accounts distributing the child pornography on WhatsApp and Instagram.</p><p>ALSO READ: Meta complies, shuts down Instagram accounts and WhatsApp channels posting sexual content of SA school children</p>Ruling welcomed<p>Sadleir welcomed the ruling. “I will forever be indebted to these incredible humans who dropped everything and gave up a whole week to help us with this matter,” she said.</p><p> </p><p>“It looked a bit like David and Goliath in court this morning – our young legal team against an army of senior lawyers. Thank you, team. You gave a whole lot more than 67 minutes this week.” </p>Information handover<p>Meta also agreed to provide DLC with information in its possession pertaining to the creator(s) of each of the WhatsApp channels and Instagram profiles listed, in no later than three business days.</p><p>“The information provided to the applicant shall not be publicly disclosed to the general public and shall only be used for purposes of reporting to law enforcement potential crimes related to the accounts at issue and taking appropriate legal steps for the protection of children,” the court ordered.</p><p>Meta and WhatsApp also agreed to pay DLC’s costs for the urgent application.</p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Communications department welcomes ruling on Meta’s WhatsApp and Instagram</p>Sexual content<p>DLC launched the interdict in which all lawyers acted pro-bono after Sadleir was contacted about content on the channels that included several explicit images and videos, including that of a Grade 11 pupil from a school south of Johannesburg having sex with a girl in a room. </p><p>Another video shows a Grade 12 boy having sex with a Grade 9 girl in a school bathroom, apparently filmed by another pupil.</p><p>“If you committed suitcase (sic) RIP, you can haunt me or whatever the plan,” the poster said.</p><p> </p><p>“If your nudes got exposed sies ulayegile sfebe (you deserved it whore). When I come back, I’m opening a page on every single platform expect (sic) Facebook…there won’t be any remorse. Authority (Seta) boards have claimed they did not attend any meetings, despite the assertions by Higher Education and Training Minister Nobuhle Nkabane.</p><p>Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Higher Education convened on Friday to question Nkabane over the controversial Seta board chairperson appointments, which drew backlash due to the involvement of candidates with links to the ANC. </p><p>The minister, however, failed to attend the meeting, citing her attendance at a TVET College event in the Eastern Cape.</p><p>Her chief of staff, Nelisiwe Semane; advisor Asisipho Solani; and the department’s Deputy Director-General Rhulani Ngwenya – who, according to the minister, served on the panel – also failed to appear.</p><p>Only Advocate Terry Motau and Mabuza Ngubane, the Higher Parliament </p> </p> </p>Nkabane in the spotlight over Seta board appointments<p>After taking an oath, Ngubane told MPs that he received a letter of appointment to serve on the panel as chairperson of the nomination committee on 10 March, but he had not sent a letter of acceptance.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>“I viewed this as part of my role as chief director of Seta coordination in the department. </p><p>“To my knowledge, there’s no way the process of appointing Seta chairpersons could have been executed without my involvement or my office,” he said.</p><p>Ngubane explained that his role was to Parliament</p><p> </p><p>He stated that he received no remuneration for serving on the panel, as the responsibilities did not go beyond his regular duties.</p><p>Notably, the chief director said he attended no meetings related to the appointments.</p><p>“It is simply because I did not receive any invitation for the meetings,” Ngubane said.</p><p>“I reiterate that neither was I involved in setting any meetings, nor screening the nominations of candidates for the Seta chairpersons,” he added.</p><p> </p>Lawyer disputes appointment as panel chairperson<p>Motau, who previously indicated that an attorneys’ firm needed to formally brief him before he could assume any role as chairperson, said he received an appointment letter – dated 15 March – three days later.</p><p>After an initial meeting with Solani, a second meeting was scheduled for 23 March, but Nkabane, Ngwenya, and the advisor did not attend.</p><p>“I did not hear anything further as to this process is concerned until I saw from the media reports that the process had been finalised and that the nominations and appointments had been made,” he said.</p><p>Motau told the committee that Nkabane later wrote to him after the letter, she requested information about his “participation” in the panel and cautioned him about disclosing his identity to Parliament.</p><p>“I could immediately ascertain that the minister was formally engaged by an attorney is an issue that I raised with the minister in my letter of response on the 16th of June 2025.”</p><p>Motau added that he reminded the minister they had never met to discuss the Seta process.</p><p>Nkabane had previously attributed the confusion regarding Motau’s appointment to a “gap in communication” and issued a public apology on 24 June.</p><p>[MEDIA committee.</p><p>During the call, the minister told Motau that her office had tried to get in touch with him but was unsuccessful, as he was apparently out of the country.</p><p>“I informed the her axing</p><p>Motau further told MPs that he had expressed shock and surprise at Nkabane’s statement to the committee concerning his involvement.</p><p>“What I found inexplicable was the minister’s decision to not convene the virtual meeting I suggested [with her staff] to verify the contrary facts that I had raised in the letter and telephonic discussion, but to rather proceed and inform the parliamentary committee that I was appointed as the chair of the panel and that I did not attend any meetings.</p><p>“For these reasons, the minister’s disclosure to the portfolio committee insofar as additional correspondence between him and Nkabane was exchanged on 23 and 24 June. </p><p>In one of the three letters, Nkabane referred to the appointment as a misunderstanding and claimed there was no intent to harm his professional reputation.</p><p>“I became aware of this letter when I woke up to media reports that were indicating that the minister had reached out to me, had tendered an To the surprise of many, about 100 people who joined the mayor on the cleaning spree were officially appointed for the Extended Public Works’ Program (EPWP) on the spot.</p><p>Mpe said the new recruits will clean streets and parks in Polokwane, collect litter, and plant trees around the city.</p><p>“Mandela loved people. He loved children and the pensioners, and most importantly, he loved you. But he also loved a better life for all his people and a clean environment. That is why I am giving you this job today in honour of our dearest father- Rolihlahla Mandela,” he added..</p>Mayor on the move<p>At midday, Mpe proceeded to a sports complex nearing completion in Ward 8.</p><p> </p><p>He said the municipality has four similar sports complexes in the area, built for communities to break monotony by playing sports and driving children, whom Mandela loved so much, off the streets.</p><p>“Because a child in sports is a child out of crime, and cleanliness is close to goodness,” he said.</p><p>By 1 pm, Mpe, who doubles up as Peter Mokaba ANC regional chair, proceeded to the New Peter Mokaba Stadium where he enjoyed a meal with municipal employees and pensioners from communities under the Polokwane municipality.</p><p>The Citizen interviewed a few pensioners about what they knew about Mandela and his humanitarian work.</p><p> </p><p>“Mandela loved children and senior citizens. He was a good citizen, a man among men, a dedicated community worker and a father indeed. Morning Live has always been where families gathered at the TV before school or work to catch up on the latest news and actuality.</p><p>She’s one of the most recognised faces in the country, and after so many years, people don’t approach her for selfies in public anymore. They share memories. “They tell me about their parents or grandparents having watched Morning Live before school or work. It’s nostalgic for them. It takes them back to a different time in their lives. It’s an honour to be part of their story in that way,” she said.</p><p>Manas’ story is tied to some of South Africa’s most important moments in recent history. She has anchored the nation through its biggest triumphs and deepest crises, while keeping the country company through everyday mornings. The death of Nelson Mandela remains the most significant moment of her career. “It wasn’t just a national story; it was global. I was one of the first to walk past his body as he lay in state. Mandla Mandela was standing there alone. I hugged him, and it hit me that I was about to tell this story to the entire world. It was emotional beyond words.” That same year brought personal heartbreak when her co-anchor and friend, Vuyo Mbuli, passed away suddenly. “It was incredibly difficult to keep the show going while mourning a friend. Viewers had loved us as a team, and it was hard to hold the programme together through that loss.”</p>Some of SA’s biggest moments<p>Valentine’s Day in 2018 brought another tense broadcast. “We were waiting to see if Zuma would step aside. Nobody knew what was coming. I sat next to Peter Ndoro that night, and you could feel the country holding its breath.” She also remembered the uncertainty during Thabo Mbeki’s resignation, when her team was on an outside broadcast and had to scramble to find a signal to follow the unfolding story. And then there was the night last year when the ANC lost its majority for the first time. “Everyone expected a dip, but not those numbers. The mood in the studio was electric. The SABC was not exactly free from the tentacles of state capture. “I refused to do those so-called captured breakfasts,” she said. “At the time, I knew something wasn’t right. I stayed because I believed in fighting for the integrity of the show rather than walking away.”</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Manas said she has seen over the years how the news itself has changed. It’s become a flood of reportage across multiple platforms every second of the day. Social media, multiple channels, it’s mayhem. “I go to bed scrolling through headlines and wake up checking what’s happened overnight. It’s constant. There’s no pause button,” she said. “Years ago, you were told what the government wanted you to hear, and that was it,” she said. “There were no alternatives. Now there’s an explosion of information, and people are far more informed, but sometimes in the wrong way. Fake news has become one of the biggest challenges. People pile in without checking facts. You can’t rely on one source anymore. You need to read widely, dig deeper and always look for the other side of the story. There’s always another side.”</p><p>Getting away from work, because it’s news, it’s not easy. She finds balance in her family. “My kids are my light. Even on their bad days, they make me happy and take my mind off things.” Manas is also an avid padel player and got into the sport before it was a trend. “We discovered it during Covid. It was just the four of us in our family playing together when there was no socialising allowed. It was just fun. I introduced it to everyone I knew, and now it’s everywhere. I still love it.” At home, cooking is more practical than a passion. “I come from a family of incredible cooks, so I can cook well, but it’s not something I rush to do. When I have time, I enjoy making Lebanese food because it connects me to my heritage. But most nights, it’s about getting dinner on the table for the kids.”</p><p>In between, she still finds time to read and recently enrolled at the University of Cambridge for a course called Communicating for Influence and Impact. “I communicate for a living, but I want to learn how to do it better. 3210957	有图 <p> The US tariffs have turned the global economy into a roller-coaster as it affects every part of economic growth and decline. </p> <p> <img src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=" rel="noopener noreferrer"><noscript><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Weekly-economic-wrap-US-tariffs.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"></noscript> <p>Picture: iStock</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>In what was supposed to be a quiet week on the economic front, US tariffs kept people watching the economic news, while there was local news on mining production and retail sales.</p><p>Lisette IJssel de Schepper, chief economist at the Bureau for Economic Research (BER), says the big global data prints of the week came on Tuesday, with better-than-expected Chinese GDP growth for the second quarter and US core inflation coming in lower than expected, but still (finally) reflecting some signs of tariffs being passed on to consumers.</p><p>In South Africa, she says, the uptick in mining production and retail sales was positive for gross domestic product (GDP) for the second quarter.</p><p>“There was plenty of political news to digest. Key training partners Canada (35%) and Mexico (30%) face similar hurdles, although some exceptions for trade covered by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) remain in effect.</p><p>“All countries have, so far, held off on immediate retaliation, but the EU finalised a list of countermeasures to strategically target US exports to the EU. It has held off on retaliating so that negotiations can continue, but plans to target €72 billion of imports, ranging from industrial goods (Boeing, cars and machinery) to agri-food products (including bourbon).</p><p>“Some EU countries pushed for the option to use anti-coercion instruments, which give broader powers to, for example, introduce taxes on US tech companies or restrict access to parts of the market.”</p><p>ALSO READ: ArcelorMittal warns it might close without urgent solution to challenges</p><p> </p>Headlines in global markets written in halls of power, not just Wall Street<p>Bianca Botes, director at Citadel Global, says this week in global markets the headlines were written not just on Wall Street, but in the halls of power from Washington to Beijing. “Trade, technology and teetering central bank policies collided, reordering how investors see risk, reward and the future path of markets.”</p><p>She says Trump’s surprise announcement of potential sweeping tariffs on its key trading partners, South Korea, Japan, Brazil and Canada, sent waves through the commodity world and reignited concerns about global supply chains.</p><p>“Notably, a proposed hefty 50% tariff on copper imports, potentially starting 1 August, catapulted the red metal’s futures prices. While previous tariff announcements sometimes triggered swift, knee-jerk selloffs, market reaction this time was more nuanced.</p><p>“Why? Investors are, by now, warier but also somewhat desensitised to the tug-of-war on trade. Rather than a wholesale equity retreat, money, instead, flowed into safe havens. Silver surged nearly 4% and select commodity classes outperformed as investors hedged their exposure.</p><p> </p><p>“This sector-by-sector action underscores a key theme for 2025: the world is learning to trade around trade policy, analysing which assets get hit hardest and which might benefit.”</p><p>ALSO READ: Government must intervene with US tariffs, act stronger with police corruption</p>Oil and gold also affected by US tariffs<p>Botes points out that oil steadied on supply worries, while gold dipped on strong data. “Brent Crude hovered near $69.60/barrel, holding on to a 1.5% gain, after geopolitical tensions and tighter supply boosted prices.</p><p>“Meanwhile, gold hovered just below $3 340/ounce, heading for its first weekly decline in three weeks. The retreat follows stronger US data, with retail sales rebounding and jobless claims hitting a three-month low, thereby reducing the urgency for Fed rate cuts.</p><p> </p><p>“Despite the policy tug-of-war within the Fed, gold remains underpinned by geopolitical risks and tariff uncertainty. With Trump’s notification of tariff rates to over 150 trade partners, safe haven appeal remains intact.”</p><p>According to Busisiwe Nkonki and Isaac Matshego, economists at the Nedbank Group Economic Unit, the rand is trading around R17.70/$ this afternoon, pulling back from R17.92 last Friday despite worries about the 30% import tariff on exports to the US. “The rand benefited from positive sentiment that boosted emerging market currencies.”</p><p>In commodity markets, the Brent Crude Oil price softened on concerns about the effects of the Trump tariffs on global demand, while gold continued to move around $3340 and platinum jumped to the highest level since August 2014 as supply concerns worsened.</p><p>ALSO READ: Does stronger economic activity indicate improved GDP?</p><p> </p>Will mining production perform better in the second quarter?<p>Mining production increased by an above-consensus 0.2% in May, marking the first annual expansion since the start of this year, after a sharp 7.7% contraction in April. Iron ore was the largest positive contributor, while declines in manganese ore and coal production were the biggest drag.</p><p>Nomvelo Moima, an economist at the BER, says that barring a sharp reversal in June, it appears the mining sector is likely to contribute positively to GDP in the second quarter.</p><p>Mamello Matikinca-Ngwenya, Siphamandla Mkhwanazi, Thanda Sithole and Koketso Mano, economists at FNB, say the increase in seasonally adjusted mining output suggests a continued improvement in output in the second quarter, with production up 2.6% in the three months until May.</p><p>“Should this trend continue, mining production will contribute positively to GDP growth.”</p><p>Nkonki and Matshego say the outlook remains murky. “While most mining products will likely be exempted from the 30% US tariff on South African imports, the ongoing tariff war will hurt global growth in the quarters ahead, weighing on export demand and commodity prices.”</p><p>ALSO READ: Retail sales: South Africans spent R19.6 billion on clothes and furniture in May</p>Retail sales and motor trade faring better, but wholesale drags<p>Statistics SA released a batch of domestic trade data for May, affirming that consumer spending remained solid during the second quarter. He also questioned why his team shouldn’t be allowed to do it, asking who decides what is for and against the spirit of the game – something that had come into question.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Italy coach Gonzalo Quesada said after the match the move was not in the spirit of the game.</p><p>World Rugby said a request by Italy stated: “A question has come up regarding the legality of the play under Law 9.7(a), which states: ‘A player must not intentionally infringe any law of the game.’</p><p>“Watching the dynamics of the restart, we were wondering whether it was carried out in full compliance with both the letter and the spirit of the law. We would really appreciate your view, to ensure a consistent and shared interpretation at international level.”</p><p>In summary, World Rugby stated: “If a team deliberately runs ahead of the ball carrier at a kick off, and/ or deliberately kicked so it doesn’t reach the 10m line, what should the sanction be?”</p><p> </p><p>According to World Rugby Law 9: Foul Play: Unfair play, 9.7 states: “A player must not: a. Intentionally infringe any law of the game. Sanction: Penalty.”</p><p>In the match in Gqeberha, the Boks also employed the midfield “fake lineout” where they lifted a player in open play to set up a driving maul. They scored two tries from the move. They have shown us the standard. Coach Rassie (Erasmus) used them as an example, with the hunger that they have and how aggressive they are. And how in their last game (semifinal against Argentina) they took every opportunity that was on offer,” said Kolisi.</p><p>“That’s what they are going to need (against New Zealand U20). I also love how you can’t single any player out. You can see the way they are playing, they understand what it means, and that it isn’t only about them,” said Stick.</p><p>“I know they are playing away in Italy, but the way they are fighting is fantastic. I like the cohesion in their team, you can see they are in a good space, and every player has performed when they have gotten an opportunity.</p><p>“For those youngsters, I know one thing for sure. Playing a Rugby World Cup final, even at junior level, does change your life. It opens many channels and opportunities.
