Picture: Instagram/@kellykhumaloza</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Award-winning singer Kelly Khumalo has responded to Advocate Malesela Teffo’s claims regarding the murder of Senzo Meyiwa.</p><p>Meyiwa was shot and killed at Khumalo’s mother’s home in Vosloorus in 2014.</p><p>On Podcast and Chill on Thursday, Teffo claimed Meyiwa’s death was not due to a robbery, alleging that Khumalo mistakenly shot and killed him.</p><p>“It was a fatal mistake. Kelly Khumalo shot and killed Senzo instantly at about half past eight… I state this further under oath — it was a fatal mistake,” he said.</p><p>Teffo was previously involved in the case as a defence lawyer for four of the accused. Picture: Moneyweb</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>The South African Revenue Service (Sars) has had great success with its tax collection efforts, thanks to artificial intelligence (AI) – and the absence of overly rigid regulation of new technology.</p><p>“We are on a path that has no [precedent] and therefore one must balance the development of policy and practice,” said Sars Commissioner Edward Kieswetter on Thursday, when representatives of central banks, the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA), and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) took part in a roundtable discussion about the role of AI in financial systems.</p><p>The discussion was a side event of the G20 Finance Track meeting, which is taking place at the Zimbali Resort in KwaZulu-Natal.</p><p>“If policy gets too far ahead of practice, we may in fact suppress the experimentation and the exploration of new technology,” Kieswetter notes.</p><p>He says Sars has already used machine learning and AI to assess 65% of taxpayers – nine days into the tax filing season – without requiring them to submit a tax return.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Businesses embrace GenAI in SA, but strategy and skills are lagging – report </p> </p> </p><p>“We’ve drawn only on third-party data and used machine learning, algorithms, and AI to perform the assessment and fraud risk detection.”</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Twenty years ago, it took Sars six months to assess six million taxpayers.</p><p>“This year, they will not have to file. And for the two million who choose to file, they will receive an assessment in under five seconds.”</p><p>Within the first nine days of the 2025 tax season, Sars had already paid out R12 billion in refunds and raised R3.5 billion in assessments.</p><p>Kieswetter notes that the use of AI also helped Sars prevent R5.5 billion in impermissible refunds.</p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Sars makes changes to eFiling for easy use</p>‘New and complex risks’<p>Opening the roundtable discussion on Thursday, South African Reserve Bank Governor Lesetja Kganyago warned that while AI holds significant potential for financial innovation and inclusion, it also introduces new and complex risks that make supervision challenging.</p><p>“Our mandate tends to converge on key fundamentals to safeguard financial stability, to uphold efficient operation of financial markets, and to deliver consumer protection.These are not abstracts, they are tangible promises we’ve made to our constituents.”</p><p>Kganyago added that AI brings “a profound duality – a landscape of immense opportunity interwoven with significant risk”.</p><p> </p><p>On one hand, it can enhance risk detection at both the institutional and system-wide levels, improve consumer credit scoring, and deepen inclusion.</p><p>But these same tools can also amplify market shocks and perpetuate bias.</p><p>Kganyago emphasised the need for regulators to remain committed to core mandates while adapting to new technologies.</p><p>“Technology will change. The tools we use will evolve beyond recognition. But our mandate remains constant – ensuring stability in the value of the monies of the people who are the users of the financial system.”</p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Sars records increase in taxpayers who filed returns</p>AI adoption in South Africa’s financial sector<p>Katherine Gibson, divisional head at the FSCA, provided new insights from a soon-to-be-published joint survey conducted with the Prudential Authority.</p><p>The survey covered nearly 2 000 institutions across banking, payments, insurance, fintech and more, to gauge how AI is being used across South Africa’s financial sector.</p><p>“It reveals a sector that is cautiously optimistic about AI’s potential, and, as expected, a range in the pace of adoption,” according to Gibson.</p><p> </p><p>In 2024, global financial sector investment in AI exceeded $50 billion (R892.7 billion), with projections to surpass $150 billion (R2.7 trillion) annually by 2028.</p><p>She says locally, fintechs are leading AI uptake, with two-thirds already deploying it. Over 50% of banks have followed suit, while insurance and lending sectors are more reserved, with adoption rates under 10%.</p><p>“Banks are investing almost 20 times more than the rest of the sector.”</p><p>ALSO READ: Economists say they are confident in Sars</p><p>However, she stresses that with innovation comes responsibility.</p><p>“We must ensure that hyper-personalisation does not become a byword for hyper-exploitation and that generative AI chatbots are not mis-selling complex products to consumers who do not understand them.”</p><p>She warns that some institutions have not implemented transparency safeguards.</p><p>“About one fifth of SA institutions reported not using any explainability models or methods for their AI models, which raises questions about transparency and accountability and consumer protection.”</p><p>For many institutions, South Africa’s data protection law (Popia) is seen as the top constraint to AI adoption. Gibson disagrees with the notion that regulation is a barrier.</p><p>“These are not barriers to innovation, but essential guardrails to ensure tech serves the public good.”</p><p>ALSO READ: Sars gets AI to sniff out tax evaders</p>OECD flags risk of market volatility<p>OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann warns that generative AI brings growing threats of financial fraud, scams and cyber attacks – particularly as global financial markets become increasingly connected through similar AI tools.</p><p>“The use of AI in financial markets could also increase market volatility for a significant number of participants that rely on similar AI models, leading to a convergence of trade and feedback loops between models,” Cormann cautions.</p><p>The OECD’s most recent risk monitor found that AI use in credit assessments and insurance underwriting can compromise privacy and lead to discrimination.He says competition, rather than concentration, would be key to securing the benefits of AI in finance.</p><p>This article was republished from Moneyweb. 3210996	有图 <p> The grim details were revealed in several studies commissioned since the year 2000. </p> <p> <img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Water-Contamination.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"> <p>Picture: iStock </p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>South Africa’s water resources and drinking water have been contaminated with microplastics, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and anti-retrovirals (ARVs) that could pose risks to human health and the environment.</p><p>The grim details were revealed in several studies commissioned since the year 2000 by the Water Research Commission (WRC), an entity of the department of water and sanitation (DWS), along with local and international research organisations.</p>Studies<p>The studies were commissioned to probe the presence of contaminants of emerging concern (CEC) in water resources and drinking water.</p><p>One of the studies related to anti-retrovirals (ARVs) was undertaken by the University of North West.</p>ARVs <p>The study found traces of ARVs in samples taken from rivers and potable water sources.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Pilots at this airline may strike starting next week </p> </p> </p><p>South Africa has rolled out a massive programme to curb HIV and Aids, including access to ARVs to reduce the risk of the onset of Aids.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>In a statement, water and sanitation department spokesperson Wisane Mavasa said that traces of ARVs are entering municipal sewage systems and passing through these systems into rivers.</p><p>“This can be attributed to the pharmacological process where the active part of the medication is absorbed by the body, leaving the residual to be discharged from the body, subsequently finding its way into the sewage system.</p><p>“These traces of ARVs can then also be present in water that has been extracted from rivers by municipalities to be treated and supplied as potable water,” Mavasa said.</p><p>ALSO READ: Rand Water rubbishes claims of ‘poisoned’ Vaal Dam water</p><p> </p>Water quality<p>Mavasa said the key quality risks to human health of a biological and microbiological nature are “well understood and regulated in South Africa”.</p><p>“The traces of pharmaceuticals, microplastics and other such CECs that have been found in water resources in South Africa are very small, measured in nanograms (one billionth of a gram). Conventional water and wastewater treatment technologies are designed to remove much larger contaminants such as particles of faeces and bacteria.”</p>The study, commissioned by the WRC and carried out by North West University, found that:Almost all the concentrations in drinking water samples at the test sites were below limits of quantification. The most frequently detected compound was fluconazole (28 detections from 72 samples), with concentrations ranging between 0.06-1.8 μg/L (nanograms per litre)Nevirapine and efavirenz were the second most detected compounds, both with 22 detections out of 72 samplesHowever, on average, lopinavir and efavirenz had the highest concentrations of the compounds analysed, while Didanosine and zidovudine were the least detected compounds (2 and 6 detections out of 72 samples).Wastewateer treatment plants not removing ARV traces<p>Mavasa added that higher concentrations of traces of ARVs were found downstream of wastewater treatment plants.</p><p>“This means that the municipal wastewater treatment works are not removing them, because most existing wastewater treatment works have not been designed to remove CECs. Low concentrations of ARVs were found in some of the drinking water samples.</p><p> </p><p>“There is a possibility that high concentrations of ARVs in sewage or municipal wastewater might reduce the effectiveness of the wastewater treatment works in removing bacteria from the wastewater. Further research is required in this regard,” Mavasa said.</p><p>ALSO READ:Joburg Water warns Phumlamqashi it will not reconnect illegal connections</p>Is the water safe?<p>Mavasa said that while the presence of ARV residues in drinking water is harmless, prolonged exposure to the broader population may lead to antimicrobial resistance, a subject of ongoing research.</p><p>“Pharmaceuticals such as ARVs are drugs used to treat diseases – they do not cause diseases. Therefore, the presence of traces of ARVs in the water will not result in people contracting HIV.</p><p> </p><p>“At present, there is limited knowledge of environmental toxicity, potential adverse effects on ecosystems and viral resistance of these compounds. It is dynamite from the gut, and there is only one place where you really get that kind of effect. Classical music. Operatic arias. Singers who belt it all out with nothing between them and the audience but air and instinct. That is music in its natural state. The way Bach, Handel, Mozart and Beethoven meant it. When the voice was not decoration but an instrument.</p><p>Soprano Linda van Coppenhagen has been an instrument of song in Europe for over a decade. There’s no tech and gadgetry or engineered smoke and mirrors. Just powerful lungs, absolute control, physical endurance and emotion. She returned home in July for two shows in Joburg, including a Theatre on the Square appearance on Friday, 25 July.</p><p>Her new album is titled Heimwee, which means ‘homesickness’</p><p>The album was recorded over several years and saw its genesis during lockdown in Germany, during the time of the pandemic.</p><p>“We were stuck inside. The world was strange. It is all part of the truth.”</p>Classic music rules, ok?<p>Van Coppenhagen grew up in Johannesburg, studied in Pretoria and Cape Town, and left to pursue her stage dreams in 2010 after winning the Musiqanto Classical Singing Competition. Since then, she has built a highly successful career in Germany, where opera is part of daily life. She couldn’t pursue her career at home because the market and concomitant opportunities do not make for a sustainable career. It’s the storytelling, the universal themes still relevant after centuries, and the power of the sound. She shared how music was different hundreds of years ago, and even the pitch was somewhat different to what we know today. </p><p> </p><p>Baroque composers like Handel and Bach wrote their music to be performed at a lower pitch. What we now consider normal tuning is set at 443 hertz. But in their day, it was closer to 415 hertz. </p><p>The difference may seem small, but she says it changes everything. </p><p>“It is warmer. Softer. When I sing Handel at 443, it feels rushed and unsettled. At 415, it settles in the body differently. The brain responds. The music feels like it belongs.” She compared it to playing Tetris. “When the tuning is right, it all locks into place. The music becomes something real and whole. Something your body recognises.”</p>No mics needed<p>And it’s all done without a PA system, a front-of-house desk and engineers. Instead, your whole body becomes an instrument, and the ability to project vocals into every corner of a theatre or arena is the challenge. It takes power, a lot of training and manual precision, she said. But also, vulnerability. “You are naked up there. There is no reverb to carry you. You must carry yourself,” she said. “But when the audience hears it the way it was meant to be heard, something changes. It becomes a connection, not just a performance.”</p><p> </p>Soul music still exists<p>It’s something that’s gotten a bit lost in some modern music, but Van Coppenhagen said that music with soul still exists, across genres. Yet it is becoming harder to find. </p><p>“There was a time when pop stars were real musicians. Michael Jackson. Queen. They wrote their own songs. They played their instruments. What you saw on stage was what you heard,” she said. </p><p>“Now we are drowning in effects. Everything is polished and packaged, but the emotion is missing.” </p><p>This is also why she said that perhaps classical music and the power of arias, for example, may make a comeback, especially because of the emotional punch it packs. </p><p> </p><p>“Like books. Like vinyl. Maybe classical music is due for a comeback as people seek out more authenticity,” she said.</p><p>Tickets for the Joburg shows at Theatre on the Square on 25 July are R100. The recall in May 2025 affected 905 cars that were sold from 2 April 2025. But, Feinberg-Mngomezulu is a seriously talented play-maker who’s received plenty of backing by the Boks.</p><p>Feinberg-Mngomezulu started against the Barbarians and had a decent game, while he played off the bench last week against Italy, so this is another big game for him. Picture: Gallo Images</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus was this week once again forced to explain his omission of Evan Roos from a Bok matchday 23, this time to face Georgia in a one-off Test at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday evening.</p><p>Roos has had a difficult time in the Springbok setup since making his debut in 2022, only playing eight times and frequently finding himself out in the cold, but Erasmus claimed they still had plans to include the Stormers No 8 in the future.</p><p>With Jasper Wiese suspended for the next four games and players such as Elrigh Louw and Ben-Jason Dixon out injured, it seemed like Georgia would be the perfect game to give Roos, a specialist eighthman, a proper run.</p>Surprise pick<p>Instead, utility forward Cobus Wiese, who made his Bok debut off the bench at lock against Italy in Gqeberha last weekend, was the surprise pick at No 8 and experienced loose forward Kwagga Smith, who will be covering all three loose forward positions, which Roos can do as well, is included on the bench</p><p>That led to the Bok head coach having to defend his decision at this week’s team announcement press conference.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Springboks aiming for big finish to mid-year Tests </p> </p> </p><p>“Evan has picked up eight Test caps now with us. He has trained very well with us, but we also want to make sure of our depth. We have lost Elrigh, Ben-Jason, and Jasper is now out again with a ban. We have given Evan chances and he has been training with us and everyone can see that,” said Erasmus.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>“But we also want to see how a guy like Cobus can do there because we feel he has the potential to play there. It is a long season and after four matches the door is not closed for anybody but we would like to see how Cobus does.</p><p>“We really have a good feeling about him as another lineout option but Evan is definitely still in the mix, without a doubt.”</p><p>Erasmus tried to expand, explaining the amount of depth in the Bok squad and how various players are slotting in to get more game time, but most of the players he mentioned get other chances over the whole season.</p>Limited game time<p>This while Roos may only get the 24 minutes he did in the second Italy Test last weekend, as Jean-Luc du Preez started against the Barbarians and Wiese started both Italian Tests, while Smith was on the bench for the first two games.</p><p> </p><p>“We try to mix it up, we never drop somebody in our team. We rotate. I don’t know if people want to believe that or not. But if we get 15 or 20 caps into Evan before the next World Cup cycle and we get 10 or 12 to Cobus Wiese,” Erasmus said.</p><p>“We are trying to see how it goes if Jesse (Kriel) is replaced by Canan (Moodie). We don’t really see Jesse as No 1, Canan as No 2 and Ethan (Hooker) as No 3. Lukhanyo (Am) also has to return.</p><p>“We would like to know that Canan can move to wing, Ethan can move to wing, Jesse can move to the wing, Sacha (Feinberg-Mngomezulu) can move to 12, or 15, Manie (Libbok) can go to 15 and Handre (Pollard) can go to 12.</p><p>“The more we work together the better it is. We see it as guys getting chances, trying out combinations and doing it under pressure. (Photo by RODGER BOSCH / AFP)</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Snout pressed to the ground, a border collie named Delta zigzagged through the shrubs on a private nature reserve near Cape Town, frantically sniffing for critically endangered tortoises.</p><p>The dog stopped abruptly in front of a small bush and lay down, signalling a find as Delta’s handler moved in to search the surrounding area.</p><p>Hidden in the tall grass was a tiny reptile, its shell marked with yellow star-like patterns — a clear sign it was a geometric tortoise, a species found only at the southern tip of Africa.</p><p>“It’s an adult female, you can tell by its flat belly,” said Esther Matthew, the dog’s handler and a conservation officer for South Africa’s Endangered Wildlife Trust.</p><p>ALSO READ: South Africa’s oldest Giant Aldabra tortoise turns 120</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Cold snap and clouds: Cape Town braces for chilly, windy weekend </p> </p> </p><p>She explained that the organisation uses canines to sniff out the endangered species by “building positive association with the tortoises’ odour”, throwing Delta a foam frisbee as a reward.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Dogs are five times more effective than humans at this type of search and “also help us find the smaller tortoises which are often overlooked, the hatchlings and the juveniles”, Matthew said.</p><p>“We’ve seen a dramatic increase in the number of finds with the dogs.</p>Shrinking numbers <p>Their help has become crucial in studying and protecting the geometric tortoise, found only in South Africa’s Western Cape province and on the verge of extinction.</p><p>The species’ population was already as low as 1,500 individuals in the wild in the early 1990s, according to biologist Andrew Turner, who works for the conservation authority Cape Nature.</p><p> </p><p>It is now estimated at only several hundred animals with “declines pretty much across the entire remaining range of this species”, he told AFP.</p><p>ALSO READ: Shell-ebrity: world’s oldest tortoise turns 190 (ish)</p><p>On the nature reserve, Delta and Matthew — helped by colleagues searching the bushes with sticks — found a dozen of the hardy reptiles.</p><p>“We record all the tortoises we can find, all the data, measurements and weight,” Delta’s handler explained.</p><p> </p>‘Creating corridors’ <p>With the species’ natural habitat shrinking due to agriculture and urban expansion, these surveys have become all the more critical, Turner said.</p><p>“There are very few places left in the Western Cape that still support these tortoises. It’s really just a couple of nature reserves and pieces of good habitat left on people’s private property,” he added.</p><p>“The remaining patches of vegetation are not really connected to each other anymore. It results from vein valves becoming less effective.</p><p> </p><p>“It comes with age. Gravity and obesity doesn’t help if that’s a condition that people suffer from. Picture: Gallo Images/Jeffrey Abrahams</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Higher Education and Training Minister Nobuhle Nkabane came under heavy criticism on Friday after failing to appear before Parliament to address mounting concerns over the controversial appointments to Sector Education and Training Authority (Seta) boards.</p><p>Members of the Portfolio Committee on Higher Education convened in the Good Hope Chamber in Cape Town, expecting to hear from the minister and members of the independent advisory panel that made recommendations on the now-withdrawn appointments.</p><p>However, Nkabane was absent, attending an annual national student leadership induction programme at Buffalo City TVET College in the Eastern Cape, where she delivered a keynote address.</p><p>ALSO READ:‘A lying minister in Cabinet’: Why has Ramaphosa not fired Nkabane?</p><p>The minister has been accused of misleading the committee over the appointment of Seta board chairpersons, some of whom have ties to the ANC. </p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> ‘Emails’ reveal Nkabane misled Parliament over Seta scandal – but insisted it wasn’t intentional </p> </p> </p><p>She previously told MPs that the selections were made by an “independent” panel chaired by Advocate Terry Motau. </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>But Motau later denied any involvement. </p><p>The rest of the panel included officials from the Department of Higher Education, including Nkabane’s chief of staff, Nelisiwe Semane, and advisor Asisipho Solani.</p><p>The DA has since laid a criminal complaint against Nkabane and also reported her to both the Public Protector and Parliament’s Ethics Committee.</p>Nkabane ditches Parliament <p>Higher Education deputy ministers Buti Manamela and Mimmy Gondwe were present at Friday’s meeting, along with Motau. </p><p> </p><p>The session had initially been scheduled for the previous week, but was postponed at the request of MPs.</p><p>Other panel members were absent, including Solani and Semane. Semane submitted a medical certificate indicating she was unwell.</p><p>Department of Higher Education Deputy Director-General Rhulani Ngwenya was also a no-show.</p><p>Committee chairperson Tebogo Letsie told MPs that he had received a letter of apology from Nkabane earlier in the week but found it unacceptable.</p><p> </p><p>“It does not make sense why she would not be available,” Letsie said.</p><p>READ MORE:Will Ramaphosa act? However, the minister asked that the meeting take place next week.</p><p>In the correspondence dated 17 July, Nkabane wrote: “I remain ready to appear to clarify and fully account on this matter; however, I respectfully request the committee to reconsider rescheduling the session to a mutually agreeable date in the following week, preferably 22 or 23 July, taking Cabinet commitments into account.</p><p> </p><p>“This will enable me to participate meaningfully in both engagements without compromising either constitutional or stakeholder obligations.”</p><p>She also offered to attend virtually after 5 pm on Friday or Saturday.</p><p>“This request is made in good faith and not in not as an act of avoidance,” the letter further reads.</p>Watch the meeting below:<noscript></noscript><p>Letsie also read out a letter from Ngwenya, indicating she had returned to Gauteng. </p><p> </p><p>That letter referenced a note circulated within the department – allegedly from the director-general’s office – claiming the parliamentary meeting had been cancelled due to Nkabane’s apology.</p><p>The chairperson said the claim was “very disturbing” and criticised Solani for “blue-ticking” the committee.</p><p>“No apology, no confirmation, nothing,” he said.</p>MPs demand accountability from Nkabane over Seta board appointments<p>ANC MP Gaolatlhe Kgabo expressed frustration with the no-shows.</p><p>“The minister is in no position to tell us whether we must postpone the meeting or not,” he said.</p><p>Kgabo pointed out that this was not the first time a committee session had been delayed due to Nkabane’s absence, and accused both the minister as well as Director-General Nkosinathi Sishi of contempt of Parliament.</p><p>DA MP Karabo Khakhau questioned Nkabane’s decision to attend a TVET college event when that responsibility could have been handled by a deputy minister.</p><p>“Now, two deputy ministers are sitting here, who do not have any constitutional authority to appoint Seta board chairpersons, let alone convene a panel to advise them on those appointments.”</p><p>READ MORE:‘It’s the president’s prerogative’: Nkabane responds as critics demand her axing</p><p>Khakhau went on to say that the minister’s evasiveness was a “spit in our faces”. </p><p>She called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to fire her.</p><p>“Nobody else has an excuse not to come,” she said, highlighting the presence of Chief Director for Seta Coordination Mabuza Ngubane at the meeting.</p><p>DA MP Désirée van der Walt echoed similar sentiments.</p><p>“She’s avoiding us because she is guilty. They’ve become practical and attainable status symbols. Yet hatchbacks continue to deliver exactly what most drivers need at a lower price.</p><p>Using AutoTrader pre-owned sales data, we compared similar crossovers and hatchbacks produced from 2019 to 2023 to determine whether the pros of owning a crossover outweigh the cons.</p>Crossover versus hatchback<p>Many of the B-segment hatchbacks have a crossover counterpart like the Peugeot 208 and 2008, Suzuki Baleno and Fronx and Renault Clio and Captur. But the T-Cross consumes 0.6L/100km more than the VW Polo’s claimed 5.3L/100km. It also has a shorter fuel range (678km vs 755km) and emits more carbon emissions. </p><p>Should it matter to you, the VW T-Cross also accelerates from 0 to 100km/h 0.7 seconds slower than the Polo.</p>VW Polo and T-Cross equally safe<p>While the T-Cross offers a 34 litre bigger boot than the 351 litre boot of the VW Polo, both vehicles seat five occupants. Both carry the same safety ratings, with Euro NCAP awarding each a five-star score.</p><p>The VW T-Cross provides a marginally more spacious interior. Still, the average small, young family is unlikely to notice, making the VW Polo the more sensible choice for used car buyers.</p><p> </p><p>“When you look at the data side by side, the value equation speaks for itself,” said George Mienie, CEO of AutoTrader.</p><p>“In many cases, hatchbacks offer lower purchase prices, better fuel economy and comparable safety and tech to their crossover counterparts without compromising everyday usability. Picture:Gallo Images</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Tiffany Meek, the 31-year-old Fleurhof mother accused of murdering her 11-year-old son Jayden-Lee Meek, has vehemently denied abusing or killing her child as she applied for bail in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court. </p><p>The emotional mother broke down in court on Friday as she denied allegations that have sparked public outrage and social media condemnation.</p><p>“I never abused my child,” Meek declared through her attorney, challenging claims that she was responsible for her son’s death. </p><p>The prosecution outlined four counts against Meek of murder, crimen injuria, defeating the ends of justice and attempting to obstruct justice.</p>The charges and evidence against Tiffany Meek<p>According to the charge sheet presented to the court, the state alleges that Meek struck her son with a blunt object, though the weapon has yet to be identified. </p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Bail denied in Wynberg Court murder case, alleged mastermind admits being at scene </p> </p> </p><p>Blood was allegedly found on Jayden-Lee’s bed and his school clothes and bag were discovered in the flat along with blood-stained schoolbooks.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Forensic experts determined that Jayden-Lee was killed in his home. His body was found the following morning on the staircase near the home.</p>Meek denies allegations of abusing and murdering Jayden-Lee<p>Through her attorney, Noven Naidoo, Meek pleaded not guilty to all charges and strongly denied suggestions that she was an abusive mother.</p><p>In her bail affidavit, read to the court, she maintained her innocence and expressed bewilderment at being accused of her son’s murder.</p><p>“I fail to understand how I could be charged with the murder of my son when I was the one fighting for answers and doing everything to ensure my son’s killer was found,” Meek said in her affidavit.</p><p> </p><p>She denied any wrongdoing and emphasised her role as the person who reported Jayden-Lee missing and actively searched for him. </p><p>Her defence directly discovered</p>Timeline of events<p>Meek’s affidavit provided a detailed timeline of events leading to her son’s disappearance and death. </p><p> </p><p>On 13 May 2025, Jayden-Lee failed to return home from school at his usual time, between 3pm and 4pm.</p><p>Meek said she began searching for him around the complex after confirming with the transport driver that he had been dropped off at 2.45pm.</p><p>She reported him missing to the Florida police that evening and she claimed they required a 24- to 48-hour waiting period.</p><p>According to Meek, officers who accompanied the family to the complex refused to conduct door-to-door searches, citing the lack of a search warrant.</p><p> </p><p>The next morning, Meek received a call informing her that Jayden-Lee had been found. </p><p>She rushed to the scene and took her son to a medical facility in the area, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.</p><p>Meek questioned why she was only called 50 minutes after her son had been found. </p><p>“No one bothered to call the ambulance or police, or even rush my child to the hospital, as he could have still been alive prior to our arrival.</p><p>“My son could have still been alive if he had been taken immediately for medical attention or if an ambulance had responded.</p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: When mothers are no longer seen as protectors</p>Questions about the investigation<p>Meek’s affidavit raised concerns about the police investigation. </p><p>She alleged that crucial evidence, including Jayden-Lee’s school bag, uniform and bloodstained items, was not found during the initial search on 14 May 2025, but mysteriously appeared during a second search on 16 May 2025.</p><p>“It is highly improbable and impossible for the police not to have seen or found these items as alleged on the 14th of May 2025,” Meek said.</p><p>She questioned how bloodstained underwear could have remained unnoticed in the bathtub when numerous family members and community activists had used the 31-year-old separated mother who was the sole provider for her son.</p><p>She works as an executive assistant, earning approximately R17 500 a month, which she uses to support her family.</p><p>Her employer provided character references describing her as a dedicated professional who “constantly conducts herself with diligence, maintains confidentiality where required and communicates appropriately with colleagues and stakeholders”.</p><p>Meek said she was the sole breadwinner of her family, which comprises her mother and brother. </p><p>The defence emphasised Meek’s willingness to cooperate with authorities. </p><p>Her attorney contacted investigators in June 2025, offering to facilitate any required questioning. </p><p>Naidoo said a letter was sent to the provincial commissioner requesting that all communications go through legal representatives to avoid interference from social media influencers.</p><p>Despite being aware she was a suspect since 30 May 2025, Meek continued working and living openly with her mother until her arrest on 11 July 2025.</p>Trauma and support<p>Meek told the court that she had been receiving trauma counselling from bishop Paul Ferrin of the Methodist Church of South Africa.</p><p>In a supporting affidavit, Ferrin described his contact with police officials who indicated that the investigation was advanced and that close family members were among the chief suspects.</p><p>He noted that Meek had previously lost another child two days after birth when she was 18.</p><p>“She has not avoided struggling with the massive loss of two children and has been unafraid and congruent in her struggle for meaning in life,” Ferrin wrote.</p>School denies Jaydne-Lee abuse claims<p>Meek’s defence was bolstered by statements from Jayden-Lee’s school, Royal College in Florida, which denied knowledge of any abuse. </p><p>The school’s denial came after a private investigator publicly claimed that the institution had complained about a history of abuse.</p><p>“Those allegations that were made, saying that the school was aware of physical abuse and that students came to school hungry, are not true. None of us is aware of the abuse. Picture: iStock</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>A National Security Strategy (NSS) document published this week gives an overview of the greatest dangers posed to South Africa’s stability.</p><p>Threats of a possible coup d’état were raised by Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni as the country still reels from allegations made by a senior police official.</p><p>Neither Ntshavheni nor the NSS document elaborate on any specific groups which could carry out a coup, amplifying calls for the minister to furnish the nation with proof of her claims.</p>SA ‘remains stable’<p>The redacted NSS document released on 15 July stated that domestically, the primary risks were those that undermined the state’s functionality and the physical vulnerability of citizens.</p><p>The report listed organised crime, gangsterism and illegal migration as breeding grounds of instability — all tied together with the consistent use of illegal firearms.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Sisulu Foundation: Ntshavheni’s ‘coup’ remarks as ‘deeply irresponsible and dangerous’ </p> </p> </p><p>“Illegal migrants create ‘no-go’ areas in South Africa that violate the sovereignty of the country and undermine the authority of the state.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>“The threat to socio-economic stability is caused by, among others, violent community protests as well as instability in the labour, transport and education sectors,” read the NSS.</p><p>The NSS stated that a disregard for the state’s authority was growing, fuelled by the malicious use of communication platforms. </p><p>“In order to destabilise the social and political situation in South Africa, inaccurate information is distributed, including deliberately false reports about the threat of terrorist acts,” read the document.</p><p>However, it concluded that “South Africa remains a stable country”, despite the number of internal social ills.</p><p> </p>African and global threats<p>Outside South Africa’s borders, threats to the Southern African Development Community primarily stemmed from poverty.</p><p>“Poverty and underdevelopment are the overriding human security challenge. Violence and crime feature strongly in the region as both a cause and symptom of underdevelopment,” the NSS states.</p><p>“The level and extent of terrorism as an asymmetric threat is contingent on the extent to which major demographic, socio-economic, developmental and governance issues are addressed,” it explained. </p><p>This leads to a continental spread that sees the “expansion of ungoverned and ungovernable spaces, transnational militancy, organised crime and trafficking”.</p><p> </p><p>Globally, the digital age has removed the geographical limits of crimes, leaving nations open to international crime, terrorism, sabotage and trafficking networks.</p><p>However, Deputy Minister of Defence Bantu Holomisa said on Thursday that coups were not discussed on social media.</p><p>Holomisa was one of the last leaders to successfully stage a coup south of the Limpopo when he took control of the Transkei civilian government in December 1987 as chief of the Transkei Defence Force.</p><p>“We are not expecting conventional warfare in South Africa. The major threat I foresee is civil disobedience, where we are asked by the police to assist and protect them,” said Holomisa while conducting an oversight visit at 1 Military Hospital. </p><p> </p>Digital insurgency<p>Digital communications have also been highlighted by a European body as a platform for plotting social unrest and insurgency.</p><p>A study by the German Council for Foreign Relations (GCFR) states that insurgent groups were most likely to use multiple online platforms to mobilise. </p><p>“There is a playbook available to plan a coup based on digitally maximising on- and offline capabilities to amplify a cause and push for mobilisation,” states the GCFR.</p><p>However, no group or sector of society has been identified as having the resources or organisational capacity to pose a threat to the South African government.</p><p> </p><p>This has led Ntshavheni’s opponents to insist that the minister or the security cluster reveal the source of her coup claims.</p><p>“She must tell us who, what and where,” said uMkhonto weSizwe (MP) party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela.</p><p>“She has already told the public, now she must give us details and stop politicking,” he concluded.</p><p>NOW READ: ‘A coup is not discussed on social media’: Holomisa says no need to press panic buttons</p> </p> <p> Read more on these topics coup Khumbudzo Ntshavheni State Security Agency (SSA) terrorism </p> A coup?
