Picture: Michel Bega/The Citizen</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>The Joburg Library was once a bustling hub of knowledge-sharing, giving Joburg residents access to some 1.5 million books, with hundreds of visitors daily, but for four years it has stood as an unused, empty shell. </p><p>The books are still there, but those in need of knowledge are barred. In 2021, the library closed its doors due to safety concerns. After R23 million spent on renovations, the doors are still closed, and signs of damage are still evident. </p><img src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=" rel="noopener noreferrer"><noscript><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/joburg-library-2.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"></noscript>A motif on one of the Joburg Library doors. 2706222	有图 <p> Don’t fall for calls to help with your debt – it could be debt counselling </p> <p> Many consumers are now vulnerable to be pulled into debt counselling scams because they cannot pay their debts. </p> <p> <img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/debt-counselling-warning.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"> <p>Picture: iStock</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Consumers are warned not to fall for phone calls from people who say they can help them pay off their debt, as some debt counsellors use this method to trick consumers into entering debt counselling without their knowledge.</p><p>The National Credit Provider (NCR) issued an alert to consumers recently to beware of debt counsellors engaging in the deceptive or misleading practice of placing consumers under debt counselling without their knowledge or consent. </p><p>“The NCR received an alarming number of complaints and we spotted a worrying trend. Debt counsellors are duping consumers into debt counselling while consumers do not have a full understanding of the process they are entering into and some are not even aware that they have consented to it,” Enica Mpete, manager of the complaints department of the NCR says.</p><p>ALSO READ: Consumers worse off now than in 2016, as debt counselling inquiries increase by 53%</p>Prohibited conduct in debt counselling<p>This prohibited conduct misrepresents the spirit and objectives of the National Credit Act (NCA) regarding the provisions of debt counselling as a debt relief measure. Mpete says debt counsellors are required to conduct debt counselling services in line with the NCA and to conduct these services in a manner that does not bring the debt counselling industry and the NCR into disrepute.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Debt counselling – this is what you are letting yourself in for </p> </p> </p><p>Consumers are urged to be on the alert for this prohibited conduct of debt counsellors who unscrupulously mislead unsuspecting consumers to enter debt counselling or place them under debt counselling without their knowledge or consent, as the consequences of these actions have long-lasting after-effects on consumers’ financial well-being, Mpete says.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Debt counselling trends to watch out for</p><p>She highlights these trends that consumers must look out for that can lead to them signing up for debt review without their knowledge or consent:</p>Consumers are contacted telephonically to help with debt consolidation or reduction of interest or instalments on their accounts. In other instances, the caller would claim to be calling from the NCR or working with the NCR and government to assist consumers with their debt.In most instances, callers already have consumers’ information about their obligations, making consumers believe they are really working with the NCR and government.Consumers are misled to provide and/or confirm personal information telephonically with the understanding they are providing it for something other than debt counselling, such as debt consolidation or reduced interest or instalment on accounts.Debt counselling application forms are sent to consumers via a link to their phone to sign electronically and all information obtained telephonically is later transferred to the Form 16 or debt counselling application.Some consumers only become aware of debt counselling when they apply for credit, which is rejected because they are under debt counselling.<p>ALSO READ: Debt review: should you or shouldn’t you?</p><p>What to remember about debt counselling</p><p> </p><p>What consumers must know:</p>Debt counselling or debt review is a formal process introduced by the NCA as a voluntary debt relief measure to assist over-indebted consumers.A consumer is over-indebted when your income is not enough to cover all your living expenses and debt repayments.Consumers have a right to fully understand and consent to any financial decision and must not be pressured to sign any document without reading it and fully understanding its implications.Consumers should approach a debt counsellor for assistance and voluntarily apply for debt counselling, not the other way around!It is prohibited conduct and in contravention of the NCA for a debt counsellor to mislead consumers into debt counselling or place consumers under debt counselling without their knowledge and full understanding or consent.<p>“Remember, if you are placed under debt counselling you will not be able to access further credit until the application is rejected by the debt counsellor or the magistrate’s court, or until all your current debt obligations are fully settled,” Mpete warns.</p><p>ALSO READ: There is life after debt counselling – here’s how to get there</p><p>This is what to do if you get this kind of call</p><p> </p><p>What to do if you get this kind of call:</p>You have a right to ask the caller where or how they obtained your information without your consent.Do not sign documents on your phone on the first day and/or during the first call.Always ask for a copy of the document to read it first before signing anything.Be cautious of unsolicited telephone calls helping with your debt obligations and do not fall victim to these scams.Stay informed and educate yourself to understand your rights and options as a consumer in relation to debt review and its implications on your financial future.Report any related prohibited conduct to the NCR for further investigation.<p>“The NCR encourages consumers to communicate in writing or in person instead of over the phone when they need to make decisions concerning their finances. We are just focused on winning the Freedom Cup. It’s huge for the team. If I wasn’t ok, I wouldn’t have played. It wouldn’t have changed anything for the group. I just really wanted to play, I wanted that opportunity and the doc gave me the opportunity.”</p>Backlash<p>The Boks have also prepared as best they could for what is expected to be an All Blacks backlash, after they let a 10 point lead slip in the final 12 minutes of the past weekend’s game at Ellis Park.</p><p>Kolisi admitted that the Boks hadn’t been at their best in that game and they could thus improve drastically this time round.</p><p> </p><p>“The whole week has been about the team and what we’ve done to get here. It’s not about being wary of the All Blacks. We need to put our best foot forward because we didn’t do that last week and had to fight back. We can’t do that this weekend,” said Kolisi.</p><p>“The players they have picked for the game are clearly showing what they want to do. They want to run the ball. Picture: Gerhard Duraan/BackpagePix</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>With the transfer window closing in less than two weeks time, it looks like Kaizer Chiefs will not land one of their top targets. </p><p>Amakhosi have been linked with Stellenbosch FC left-back Fawaaz Basadien and they are said to have tabled an offer for the Bafana Bafana defender, which was reportedly turned down by Stellies. </p><p>Now Speaking on Radio 2000 this week, Chiefs sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr has confirmed that Amakhosi are indeed interested in Basadien. </p><p>ALSO READ: Kaizer Chiefs confirm coach’s departure</p><p>“With Basadien, we are very transparent because we’ve always had good positive relations with Stellenbosch. Basadien has been on our radar for couple of seasons now, I think sometimes it’s just an issue of timing whether things happen at the right time or not,” said Motaung Jr..</p><p>“It’s also tough to speak about players who belongs to other clubs, it’s not professional to do that, we could be in the media talking about different candidates and that kind of thing causes destabilisation in other teams.</p><p>“We’re very respectful to our opponents; yes, we can’t run away from being linked with certain players. And a lot of the time, some of the players that are linked to us aren’t true,” he added. </p>Chiefs still keen on Velebayi<p>Meanwhile, Motaung Jr has opened up about the club’s interest in signing Cape Town Spurs winger Asanele Velebayi.</p><p>Amakhosi have been linked with Velebayi for some time. 2706218	有图 <p> Court orders release of woman who stole R75 Nivea roll-ons hours after third theft conviction </p> <p> Nomvula Buthelezi"s first conviction was in 2016, where she was cautioned and discharged. </p> <p> <img src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=" rel="noopener noreferrer"><noscript><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Nomvula-Buthelezi-jail-sentence-theft-conviction.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"></noscript> <p>Picture: iStock</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>A 27-year-old woman will be released from prison after the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) High Court in Pietermaritzburg overturned her three-year theft conviction. </p><p>Nomvula Buthelezi had been sentenced by the Dundee Magistrates’ Court for stealing two Nivea roll-ons valued at R75.</p><p>Buthelezi appeared in court on 29 July 2024, with a record of three prior theft convictions.</p><p>ALSO READ: Woman to spend 12 years in jail after stealing R16m from company</p><p>Her first conviction was in 2016, where she was cautioned and discharged. </p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Beach crimes increase in SA: Tips to stay safe these coming holidays </p> </p> </p><p>In 2018, she was fined R300 or sentenced to 30 days imprisonment. </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Most recently, on 18 July this year, she was fined R500 or sentenced to 30 days imprisonment, with the sentence suspended for five years on the condition of no further theft.</p><p>However, on the same day of her third conviction, the 27-year-old woman stole the Nivea roll-ons and was arrested again.</p>Buthelezi’s fourth theft conviction<p>On 30 July, Buthelezi appeared in court, pleaded guilty, and represented herself. </p><p>The accused requested a “small sentence,” citing her 11-year-old child as her primary concern. </p><p> </p><p>Buthelezi claimed to be without parents, unemployed, and reliant on a grant and an additional R350 for support, though she did not specify the grant’s source or amount. </p><p>She mentioned that her child was likely with neighbors since her arrest on 18 July. </p><p>The 27-year-old mother also noted that her father had left when the child was an infant.</p><p>The state, however, sought a harsh sentence due to Buthelezi’s serious history of theft convictions. </p><p> </p><p>READ MORE: Pastor jailed for 10 years over network tower battery theft syndicate</p><p>They contended that the accused only considered her child when facing legal consequences and emphasised that the shop owners expected the courts to deliver justice for the theft.</p><p>The Dundee Magistrates’ Court questioned why Buthelezi stole the items despite receiving a grant and an additional R350. </p><p>The magistrate suggested that if she lacked the funds, she should have waited until she could pay.</p><p> </p><p>Agreeing with the state, the magistrate found Buthelezi lacked remorse and had not learned from her previous convictions. </p><p>Consequently, the presiding officer imposed a three-year prison sentence.</p>Three-year jail theft conviction ‘disproportionate’<p>In a court judgment delivered on Friday, September 6, Acting Judge Mahendra Chetty stated that the sentence imposed by the magistrate was “disproportionate”.</p><p>He noted that the presiding officer had placed “undue weight” on Buthelezi’s previous convictions for similar offenses.</p><p> </p><p>Chetty, referencing a prior judgment, highlighted that the magistrate needed to take into account, among other factors, the sentence for the current offence when determining the accused’s punishment.</p><p>“A thief who steals a loaf of bread should not have to go to gaol for 10 years because he has stolen countless loaves of bread, one at a time, in the past. </p><p>READ MORE: Longwe Twala theft case postponed, brother off the hook</p><p>“His sentence should never escalate with the passage of time from a few weeks for initial offences, to a few months, eventually to years, and then to many years; the offence remains a petty offence no matter how often it is repeated,” the judgments reads.</p><p>“It is my view that the magistrate misdirected himself when he imposed sentence of three years direct imprisonment. </p><p>“Furthermore, that this is not a case where society needs to be protected from the accused by removing her altogether. </p><p>“The sentence imposed by the court is unduly harsh and inappropriate in the circumstances. The sentence will be set aside and replaced with an alternative sentence,” the judge said.</p>Child’s interest not considered<p>Chetty also found that is my view that the magistrate did not consider the child’s “best interest” when he sentenced Buthelezi to a term of direct imprisonment.</p><p>“Insofar as the child’s well-being is concerned, the magistrate directed the prosecutor to inform the investigating officer to contact social development and trace the whereabouts of child. </p><p>“Aside from this, the magistrate did not consider any further factors regarding the child. The accused is the primary caregiver of the child. </p><p>“Now that she is incarcerated, she herself is uncertain as to the whereabouts of the child. Members attempted to stop the suspects and they immediately started shooting at the members. An AK 47 rifle, four handguns and the cash trolley have been recovered. It is not often that the left side of the Bok scrum is kept steady, as Nche usually ruthlessly destroys whoever is put in front of him, but in the last match he was given a fierce challenge. Lomax will now hope for another strong showing, while Nche will be aiming to dominate.</p><p> </p><p> </p>Handre Pollard v Damian McKenzie<p>The Boks have brought back double World Cup winning flyhalf Handre Pollard into the starting line-up for the important clash and he will be fronting up against All Blacks regular Damian McKenzie in what should be a thrilling contest.</p><p>It’s hard to say that McKenzie isn’t as experienced, with him having featured over 50 times for the All Blacks in his career, but he has spent the majority of that as a bench player, while also featuring at full back. This is his first proper run as a starting flyhalf and with Beauden Barrett on the bench he will be under pressure to perform.</p><p>Pollard has a point to prove, and there could be no better game to do that in than against the All Blacks. His only two starts of the season so far came against Ireland in July, with him putting in underwhelming showings in both games, although his kicking boots were on in the second.He has since played second fiddle to Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and he will want to reestablish the hierarchy.</p>Jasper Wiese v Ardie Savea<p>The two backrow enforcers will be aiming to make a big impact for their respective teams at the breakdown, when carrying the ball and on defence. Both enjoyed solid outings in the first Test at Ellis Park and will want to stamp their authority again.</p><p> </p><p>Savea will particularly be gunning for a big showing, as the 2023 World Rugby player of the year has not reached the impressive heights he did last season when driving the All Blacks to the World Cup final. He however has been solid, but not at his very best and he will want to reach that level again.</p><p>Wiese made his first appearance of the seas for the Boks last weekend, after enduring a tough spell on the sidelines serving out a six game ban over the start of the international season. He enjoyed a strong showing, but was taken off after 48 minutes, probably to manage his work load, and he will hope for a longer run to assert himself this time.</p>Halfback replacements<p>The Boks and All Blacks have two vastly different sets of halfback replacements on the bench for the match. The hosts will be sending on Jaden Hendrikse and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu at some point in the second half, while the visitors will send on Beauden Barrett and TJ Perenara.</p><p>Hendrikse and Feinberg-Mngomezulu are exciting players, but are young and the future of SA Rugby, and although Hendrikse has won a world cup, the two have just 22 caps between them. The Sharks scrumhalf is also making his first Bok appearance in a while after returning from injury, while the Stormers playmaker returns to bench duties after a good run of starts.</p><p> </p><p>Compare that with the ridiculous experience of Barrett and Perenara, who have more often than not been All Blacks starters and boast over 200 caps between them. Picture: Neil McCartney / The Citizen</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Johannesburg’s central business district (CBD) requires a complete overhaul to improve safety and make the city more habitable, according to Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi. </p><p>On Friday, Lesufi and City of Joburg Mayor Dada Morero launched the accelerated service delivery programme in Soweto. </p><p>The premier and Morero conducted site visits, focusing on infrastructure, power stations, and reservoirs in the area. </p>Joburg CBD needs overhaul – Lesufi<p>Speaking to the media, Lesufi highlighted the need to address infrastructure issues both in Soweto and in Joburg’s CBD.</p><p>“The infrastructure there is old; we need to overhaul it. We have the capacity, skills, talent, and resources to do that. The mayor and I have agreed to establish a joint committee that will assist us to start to plan for meaningful intervention. </p><p> </p><p>“Where we identify buildings that need to be demolished, we will do so. Where we need to reclaim hijacked buildings, we will do so. It will be a long process, but we are committed. </p><p>“The good thing is that we are pooling joint resources to tackle this particular problem. It’s no longer a runaway train or on [autopilot]. For examples, we are able to respond to potholes, which are doing today. The JRA is on site. </p><p>“We are doing cleaning [as] Pikitup is here. City Power is also here looking at changing globes for streetlights and all sorts of things.”</p><p>The Joburg mayor expressed particular concern about the issues at the Jabulani Reservoir.</p><p> </p><p>“There are big challenges that we have in the water reservoir. It’s old. Then came the accident that could have ended it all.</p><p>But rather than surrendering to despair, Archimedes said he chose to believe in the impossible, to walk again. Inspired by the story of Bruce Lee who, after a similar injury, defied medical predictions and returned stronger than ever Archimedes immersed himself in studying the teachings of Lee and masters like Buddha and Confucius. He began to see the body, mind, and spirit as interconnected, each playing a crucial role in shaping our reality.</p><p>The results were nothing short of miraculous. Within 18 months of his accident, Archimedes was not only walking again but also competing at the highest level. He won the gold medal at the English Sports Acrobatics Championships, a victory that taught him a valuable lesson: “If I had believed what I was told, I wouldn’t even be standing or walking. I’d still be a victim. Picture supplied. </p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Country music, said Zac Brown of the Zac Brown Band, is a living, breathing form of poetry. It’s about real songs about life and things that we go through every day of our lives. This belief is at the heart of everything the Zac Brown Band does. It’s from the lyrics they write to the performances they deliver.</p><p>To Brown, it’s a genre that captures life’s most impactful moments in simple, relatable lines. It’s a craft that Brown has spent his entire career working on. And in a music industry where form and style can spring into life as quickly as it dies again, Brown said that country music has endured. That is because of its simplicity and authenticity. </p><p>“People think that they don’t like or resonate with country music, but then they find the right country music. Then they’re like, ‘Wow, this really speaks to me,’” he said. It is about telling real stories with real emotion. That is something that he and his band endeavour to do in every song.</p>Music captures life’s moments<p>To this end the Zac Brown Band’s music is filled with humour, life lessons, and emotive storytelling. Tracks like the classic Chicken Fried are more than just songs. </p><p>“It’s very much a list of things that we believe in, and that’s what resonates. That’s what connects with people,” Brown said. He sees songwriting, particularly in country music, as one of the last places where true poetry lives. </p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Just what is a human life worth? </p> </p> </p><p>“We aim to create that poetry that’s relatable to someone because we all have the human condition. We all go through a lot of similar things. Yet how do you sing about that in a way that makes people feel something?”</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>This is why Brown takes songwriting very seriously. He said that he is always chasing the perfect line. A line that can encapsulate a multitude of emotions in just a few words. Yet, he said, it is very challenging to distil complex ideas into simple, impactful lyrics. Legends like Willie Nelson have mastered the art, he shared. </p><p>“There’s genius in the way that he simply stated things,” he said. “That’s what we’re always chasing with a song. How to write them so simply and poetically where people are like, ‘I couldn’t have said that better myself.’”</p>Country music is poetry<p>This is probably why the multi award-winning band has racked up so many achievements in the ten years. More southern rock group than limited to country music, the Zac Brown Band’s six consecutive albums reached the top ten of the Billboard 200. Five debuted at number one on Billboard’s Country Albums chart. </p><p>The band has won three Grammy Awards, sold over thirty million singles and nine million albums. They also amassed over 10 billion streams. The band was also inducted into the Fenway Music Hall of Fame in 2022. They now keep company with legends like Paul McCartney and Billy Joel.</p><p> </p><p>The road to success for the Zac Brown Band has been anything but typical of today’s run of the mill ‘get into the studio and let the machine make the music’ bubble-gum journeys. Brown shared the band’s early days, long before they had a record deal, when they were on the road, playing hundreds of shows a year and living in tight quarters. </p><p>“We lived for ten years before we had a record deal,” he said. “We dedicated our entire lives to this (country) music, and with this same group of people, for a very long time.” This shared history has created a unique bond among the band members, one that Brown said is evident in every live performance and each recording. He has led the band since its genesis. </p><p>“If you’re a good band leader, then you’re the worst person in the band,” Brown said. “You surround yourself by people that are incredible musicians that can help pull it all off.”</p>Real bands do everything together<p>“When you’re a real band, like my band is, we live together, we create the music together, we perform together,” he said and added that no programming or machine can replicate or replace that creative energy. “You can’t fake chemistry. Neither can you buy that. You must live it.” This authenticity, the realness of the band’s own working experiences has been the foundation of their success he suggested.</p><p> </p><p>The band is also busy writing new material. “We’re working on a new album right now that’s going to come out next year,” Brown shared. The band recently spent time in Alaska arranging songs and he said that the next release will be built on what the band has always delivered, and believed in, musically. A new single Tie Up is due for release this month.</p><p>In October Brown and his band will be in South Africa to headline the Cape Town Country Music Festival at DHL Stadium on 27 October. While he loves visiting South Africa as a tourist, Brown is excited to debut on stage. “Getting to get in front of people in South Africa for the first time is a really big deal to us,” he said. </p><p>Fans can expect all the hits and a few surprises, he said. “Our band is one of those that you must see live to understand what it is all about. I was never informed of any ill effects or anything from it,” Johnstone said.</p><p>“One day, doctors were doing just routine blood tests when they called me. When I got there, he said my kidney function was at 19 per cent and if it got to 15 per cent, I’d have been on dialysis.</p><p>“They got me in to see a specialist, and the professor just said, straight up, this is to do with the Somac you’ve been taking.</p><p>“I then went to have a biopsy on my kidneys, and that pretty much just confirmed what he already knew, that I had kidney failure and that it was the Somac causing it.”</p><p>The inhibitors, commonly taken for digestive symptoms and disorders, work by decreasing the enzymes that line the stomach and cause stomach acid.</p><p>This process can increase gastrin levels, which is a hormone produced in the gastrointestinal, urinary tract and nervous system. Inició su carrera en el Hospital Municipal José María Ramos Mejía, pero su verdadera pasión emergió cuando decidió unirse al Instituto de Fisiología, dirigido por el profesorBernando Houssay, uno de los científicos más influyentes de la época. Bajo su tutela, Leloir desarrolló su tesis sobre las glándulas suprarrenales y su papel en el metabolismo de los hidratos de carbono, un trabajo que fue galardonado en 1934 con el Premio de la Facultad de Medicina.
